How long does it take to learn to play tennis?
It’s different for everyone and it depends on frequency of practice. There is not a specific amount of time before you learn the game. Generally, older kids and adults will pick up skills faster because they have better hand-eye coordination. Younger kids will build stronger fundamentals which will create a much stronger game in the future.
How many times per week should I practice?
Like anything else, the more you practice, the faster you will improve. It’s recommended for juniors to have lessons 2 or 3 times per week minimum while practicing on their own on alternate days.
What is a good age for my child to start tennis?
Age 4-5 is a good starting point for kids to begin learning the game. Depending on interest and maturity level, some kids may not be ready to start until later.
Do you think my 5-8 year old can last an hour lesson?
Most definitely! At the early age and the beginner level, the lessons are constructed on learning the game and techniques while having fun rather than the physical aspect.
What size racket should my child use?
Choosing a racket size will depend on your child’s size and skill level. Please consult with a pro with racket knowledge or a certified racket expert before you purchase a racket.
Do I have to prepay for a series of lessons?
I do not require prepayment of lessons or a lesson minimum. Naturally, if you’re satisfied with the progress, you will continue. If this is not what you’re looking for, you have the flexibility to stop the lessons at any time.
Where do you coach indoors?
During the indoor season, I mainly coach at Cabin John Tennis Center or Wheaton Indoor Tennis.
Where do you coach outdoors?
During the outdoor season, I mostly teach as north as Gaithersburg and as south as Bethesda depending on the day and time. Depending on my schedule, I am open to travelling to designated courts of your choice.
Can I share a lesson with my child or can my kids share a lesson?
Sharing a lesson should be between students of the same level. This way, you can progress at the same time without one being bored or with the other unable to catch up.
Why do other instructors have different rates?
Instructors have different rates due to experience and background. Make sure you talk to the instructor about their background, experience, and type of program they offer when choosing a pro.
How can I be involved with helping my kids practice?
Standing on the sidelines during lessons is a great way to pick up pointers to help you child practice. Be careful to not give advice on techniques you are unsure of. Certain habits are difficult to reverse. Being on the court with your child and just hitting balls may be more beneficial than you think!
What is your availability for lessons?
I am a full-time pro and instruct 7 days a week. I am on the court as early as 6am on some days, while others, finishing as late as midnight. Please contact me so that we may discuss your availability and mine.
What would you recommend for kids who want to compete?
We have one of the strongest tennis sections in the nation which means tournament level tennis in our area is extremely competitive. Juniors who wish to compete will need a solid routine for practice every day.
Can we take the winters off and resume lessons in the spring?
You will not be able to continue practice at the same level when you take time off. Unless you’re prepared to lose everything you’ve learned during the outdoor months, do not take time off! Remember, if you stop, you regress. |
